Reading skills are an important part of any homeschooling curriculum. This is because people use reading skills not just in English class, but in all subjects. Even when we study history or science, we need good reading skills to comprehend and digest the information. Homeschooling parents need not confine reading lessons to English class. In fact, you can incorporate reading lessons into every subject area. It`s also very important to encourage children to read beyond what is required in their curriculum. Developing reading as a habit will do wonders for your child`s success in many areas of their studies.
Homeschooling parents enjoy the advantage of flexibility. They are not limited by rigid curriculum, study hours, text books or any of the many limitation public school children must stick by. This helps homeschooled children fulfill their potentials as readers. Statistics show that homeschooled children often perform better on standardized reading tests than public school children. Homeschooling allows parents to incorporate reading into everyday routines. For example, you can read to your child before bed or have them read to you and that can be a part of their reading lesson for the day. Homeschooling don`t have to confine reading lessons to study hours.
Reading as a habit is not only crucial for improving reading skills, but also adds to a child`s knowledge base and improves their vocabulary and writing skills. It’s important to get your kids reading from an early age because mastering reading is a slow process. If your child doesn’t work on their reading skills from an early age, they will quickly fall behind in many subject areas.
One of the best ways to ensure your child reads consistently is to make sure that there is always a good amount of interesting books lying around in the house. Forcing kids to read may backfire and cause them to hate reading. But, if your child notices eye catching books around the house, he/she will likely feel enticed to pick them up and look through them. Another great way to instill a love for reading is to let your child catch you reading on a regular basis. You are your child’s greatest role model. If your child sees you reading everyday in the evening or before bed, they are more likely to pick up reading as a habit as well. Children love to copy everything their parents do.
Every education must be well-rounded, but reading is a building block from which much of your child`s future education will follow. Instill a love for reading in your child from an early age and they will reap the benefits of good reading skills for the rest of their lives. No matter which path your child chooses for their future education, reading skills are bound to be an important factor in their success.
